How Best to Break in New Baseballs?

Ive got quite a few of these new Rawlings baseballs, and I just can't stand how 'clean, squeeky' they feel, you know. I much prefer baseballs that appear brown/green, and have stitches that stiick waaay out.

Ive been using them quite a bit for the whole season but they still arent properly broken in.

How do you quickly break in your baseballs?

theres something called "mississippi mudd" or something like that, look into it! after they rub the ball with sand paper the mlb rubs this stuff over the balls. if you ever see an mlb ball up close you will notice that it is not white like when you open a fresh box of baseballs, they have like a light wood color to them...

Ask Yahoo! (my old stomping grounds) answered this question several years ago. According to the Tallahassee Democrat Online, the average life of a baseball is about six pitches. And, since each Major League game has around 250 to 300 pitched balls, "that would put the ball count at about 40 or 50 balls used per game."

WikiAnswers offers a similar response and adds that MLB uses around 113,850 balls per year. I imagine a good number of those go home as fan souvenirs.

Why do pitchers rub new baseballs before pitching?

Any special reasons to do that?

Yeah to warm it up and get a better grip on the ball. It's really a superstition more than anything though.

They are required to gave 90 balls on hand. Though how many used per game varies depending on many factors. Usually between 5 and 6 dozen are used (62-74.)

The pitch count includes every ball thrown to the plate while the pitcher is on the rubber. ie. ball or strike.
