When are their good rock climbing gear sales?

I need a full rack for lead climbing and i have been searching like crazy because im not stoked about dishing out 2 grand for gear. I checked out REI and Backcountry outlets but they never seem to want to sell what i need for cheap

Good luck trying to build your rack over night. Some of the best racks (the climbing kind) I`ve seen were built up over a long time. Also, you don't need every single type of pro out there. If you know the routes you will be leading you can pretty much guess the size of the cracks you will be using. I`d start off with just even or odd sizes and then maybe one or two extras. You also don't need the entire spectrum from micro to super sized.

I would check out the major retailers from time to time for sales on different pieces of gear. Also like some one above suggested getting a job in an outdoor store to get huge discounts, but then you may not come out of there with a paycheck, I know I wouldn't lol. If you know what you want I would search for deals online. Check out Backcountry.com they have great deals, especially in their outlet section of their site. Good Luck

Does anyone have a solution for how to waterproof climbing gear?

Im trying to make what I believe is a first ascent of a 30' cliff, about a 5.8, but I always fall into the pool below it and have to wait for my chalk to dry. pleez help!

Rock Climbing: Need Recommendations for Gear and More Knowledge?

Looking to become more serious and invest in some climbing gear:

1. I'd like to try trad, but do I necessarily have to build a rack first? I don't have the $ for that right now. I have a harness, shoes, ATC, biner. I'm hesitant to do sport climbing because I'm not too keen about bolts, but is that the quickest and easiest way to get experience for trad?

2. Can someone also explain to me how to tie a 'magic X'? I knew how to a few months ago but have forgotten since.

3. Read some workout tips online and in magazines, but what do you do personally to become a better climber other than actually climbing? I know pullups are helpful, but what else? (No access to a finger board).

4. People like bouldering better because of no ropes. What is its appeal to you other than that?

1) Yes, you need a rack to climb trad, or access to a partner with a rack. There is no way around it other than taking lessons and using their equipment. Sport climbing is WAY safer than trad climbing and is the best way to get experience. Trad climbers are typically very advanced climbers.

2) never heard of a magic x. sorry.

3) The best way to become a better climber is simply to climb. That can be at a climbing gym, on actual rock or bouldering. Flexibility, balance, and upper body strength are important, but good climbers use their legs just as much as their arms. Buy a cheap hand-strengthening tool.

4) some people are absolutely hooked on bouldering and that is all they want to do. Bouldering typically attempts "problems" that are very difficult and very short in comparison to sport climbing. It is the extreme difficulty that often interests people and some people become obsessed with climbing a particular problem. It may take hours to months to climb whatever problem that is being attempted.

Can i send stuff like climbing gear and watches to my cousins outside US through USPS or fedex?

Will they charge me any duty fee like a custom duty fee?

Absolutly, but depending on what you are sending and which country he's in there are forms you may have to fill out for customs. Go to their website. I think it's ups.com They have all the info on the regulations (size, weight, how it must be boxed etc.)

How do you clean cams (climbing gear)?

I have a set of cams that are still working properly but they are pretty dirty. There's lots of dirt/dust stuck in the lubricated joints. So my questions are
1) How should I clean them without degrading them in any way and
2) once they are cleaned is there any particular grease or oil I should put on the joints to replace what I cleaned off? Can I use WD-40 or would that be bad?
THANKS!!!!!!

I just wipe cams with a dry cloth and use a lubricant that will not attract any more dirt (like a dry lube spray) to clean and lube the actual joints always wiping off any extra.

WD-40 is a very good lubricant and cleaner, but it attracts too much dirt to the joints. You could use it to clean, but you would have to use soap and water to remove the oil and let them dry before using the final dry lubricant.

Good Luck
