Whats the best climbing harness to get?

Am only a beginner in terms of climbing and so far have only climbed indoors. I can't wait to go climbing outdoors but want to know if there is a suitable harness for both venues? If there is a suitable match does any one know where to buy one without it costing the earth?

one that doesn't break

What and where is the cheapest climbing harness available?

I have seen the Black Diamond for $34. I have $28... so unlucky. Thanks

$12 should get you enough webbing and a carabiner to make a Swiss Seat harness yourself.

Life span of a climbing harness ?

I haven't climbed in years but I found my old Chournard harness and the rest of my gear in the back of my closet...
It's been dry, warm and visually looks ok, and I can't say as though I fell more than once while using it. I need some liability free advise here, use it or replace it ?

If you've had your "old harness lying around in the closet for years", get rid of it. A lot of climbers have died using old harnesses that fell apart because the seams weren't as strong as they should have been. It's the same thing with ropes and slings, get rid of them too, even though you don't think they've been used that much "in years" (more than just a few). Fabrics and filaments break down simply from age, that's what plastics do. Only trust your metallic gear, which have a longer lifespan.

This is just stupid thing to try to save money on.

know of a rock climbing harness for a heavier person?

My husband loves to rock clmib but has put on some extra weight over the last couple years. He is actually quite muscular but has put on some fat over it! Anyway, he would really love to start rock climbing again but we cannot find a harness that will fit him. Do you know of any larger harness that would fit a person with 33 in legs and a 40 in. waist? Thanks.
I was wrong on the waist size. He has a 42 in waist, not a 40.

The Black Diamond product sheet shows that(http://www.bdel.com/pdf/s07_rock_export.pdf) the "speed" versions of their harnesses (Momentum, Focus, etc) size L - XXL fits 30-42” (76-107 cm) waist and 21-27” (53-69 cm) legs - that may fit.

Look at this dealer if you can't find one locally:
http://www.mountaingear.com/pages/product/product.asp/imanf/Black+Diamond/idesc/Focus+Speed+Climbing+Harness/Store/MG/item/203338/N/0

I have a Focus Speed and it has a huge range of adjustment and is much more comfortable than a wrap / diaper style harness because it has seperate leg loops and won''t squeeze you when you hang in it. This is the best kind of harness for gym or sport climbing.

Good Luck

Need help selecting a climbing harness?

Hia, can someone help me select a group of climbing harnesess that can fulfill my needs to save time when I hit the shops.

It will be my first harness, so I guess can't be too complex, but I also need it to be suitable for traditional climbing and mountaineering so need plenty of room for gear, it also needs to be ajustable so it can be used in both summer and winter, as well as offering some padding for extended climbs and indoor use when wearing only shorts, etc, anything spring to mind...?

Thanks.
Hia, I've read up a little on the Petzl Adjama harness and it seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Does anyone have any experiences with this harness they are willing to share ?

If I believe correctly, mine is "black diamond" Bod. It's in the storage now so I can't check. It served me well both in rock climbing and mountaineering. Highly recommend. I found it adjustable enough to climb the Gunks in the summer and Mt. McKinley at low temp.
