How can you safely mark the center of a climbing rope?
I purchased a new climbing rope a few months ago and the center isn't marked. I understand the solvents in permanent markers can damage the mantle. What can I do to safely mark the center of the rope so I can find it before a double rope abseil?
You can also buy a special marker (I have one from Blue Water ropes) that is safe to mark climbing ropes with. I have had one for years and it works well to mark the center.

How to make a cargo net (scramble net) with 10mm rope climbing rope?
I have 100's of feet of used climbing rope and want to make a scramble net for my kids to climb on. What type of knot(s) should be used. How to make each square the same size?
The main rope just forms rows of zig zags - the bottom of each bend attaches to previous row, the top of each bend attaches to the next row. Along the edges there is a straight piece of rope for the border. These are typically tied with a separate type of thinner rope which "lashes" the bend from each row together - the commercial ones use a metal connector the crimps the rope together.
If tying this with lashing rope, lay out the large rope with the bends marked out on each strand (which will all be the same length if your final net is going to be square). Then use some 4 or 5mm accessory cord to lash the marked points together - the double fisherman knot tied over the two main pieces of rope will work.

what is the breaking strength of standard nylon climbing rope?
im doing such resaerch for physics coursework and need to know some information about climbing rope, like breaking strength, youngs modulus, elastic/plastic deformation limit etc.
thanks.
The standard rating of climbing ropes is "UIAA falls" which the number of "falls" the rope can survive of an 80 kg mass dropped 4.8 meters. More details here:
http://lamountaineers.org/xRopes.pdf
The section you are looking for:
UIAA limits: UIAA defines a set of tests for measuring the performance
of ropes. UIAA impact force test requires dynamic
rope to be designed to limit the maximum dynamic load due
to a falling weight of 80 kg (176 lbs) to 12 kN (2697 lb)
when dropped 4.8 meters (15.7 ft) onto a 2.8 meter (9.2 ft)
section of rope. The rope is passed over a 10 mm radius edge
to simulate a carabiner. The test approximates a worst case
fall (that’s a fall factor 2, or falling twice the length of the
rope). The impact force on the weight is limited on the first
fall to 12 kN, and the rope must survive 4 falls. By limiting
the impact force on the worst case fall, this test sets the
design load that the rest of the climbing system must endure.

How do you prepare for the rope-climbing technique?
is it push-ups, pull-ups? What can you do to not get embarassed when asked to climb a rope and do the O-Course.
what else is there? there is one more where you have to traverse a rope by hanging on it, dunno what its called.
i know i can jump a 6 foot wall.
thanks Shawn. I was looking at Marines OCC. I am in decent shape but I think I need 6-8 weeks of intense daily preparation so I don't stick out at OCC.
The rope climbing is easy because they teach you a technique in which you can hang there for the whole day if you wanted to..
You place the rope through both of your boots forming as "S" shape..then you just put your weight on it and you will be locked in place..You simply pull up and lock, they you pull up and then lock..you do this until you get to the top..
All obstacle courses are about your upper body strength..You need to be able to jump a 9 ft wall..You use the chicken wing method for that..You run and jump and then grab with your hands..then you pull up and lock one arm on the top of the wall..then you pull one leg up and then the other..
The other fun obstacle is the double pull up bars..this is a normal pull up bar with another one about 2 ft above it..You have to climb over them..same method as the wall..
The you have the telephone poles that you have to get up and over..You also have the stairway to heaven..and the A frame..
These courses are more fun than anything else..
What's the best type of rope to use for rope climbing.?
I'm looking for 1.5 inch rope to hang from a tree and climb. I'm finding it quite difficult to find any rope this size, but did find information stating that manila rope doesn't do well outside. Any information on WHERE i can get rope would be fantastic.
the type made for rope climbing should do the trick!
