Rock Climbing Holds News

Does anyone know where I could get good condition rock climbing holds for cheap?

Youngest daughter a climber! We go to a rock wall place in Reading, about 80 miles round trip, but gas prices!! Would like to build her one at home-live in the country.
or know a place I could order some?

They seem to have some discontinued styles for cheap if you follow the links. Also kids holds. http://nicrosstore.biz.sco.com/tab0/store/category/5q4i/Kidz_Holdz_153.html

What rock shoes should I use for climbing above water?

I like to climb and I like the lake so I thought I would mix them.... so last weekend I went rock jumping and the tought occured I should try to climb back up! Well the hand holds were good but no footholds for my water shoes were big enough. With my rock climbing shoes (evolvs) it would be easy! They are synthetic but I really don't wanna ruin them with out a backup pair! So maybe I should go get another pair or are my synthetic ones good enough?
Any help would be great!

nope, yours shoes can shrink, but the stealth rubber on the bottom will not; therefore, if you want to save some bucks and get your climbing shoes resoled (when the wear out) you will not be able to. i would purchase another pair, or start carrying tevas, chacos or whatever with you.

check out sierratradingpost.com for some good deals on shoes for your backup pair :)

vertical hold rock climbing?

Do you have to always belay with somebody or how can you do it inddividually, im goind but have no one to bellay me! so i dunno

Some ignorant answers here.

You can get belay devices for solo climbing. I think the most popular is called The Soloist.

Simply, you can set up a fixed line from the top, rappell or hike down, and then climb. As you move up, the device, attached to your belay loop, smoothly moves up the rope, and will lock up if you fall. You need at least a cordollete loop to tie in a prussic and attach another loop to stand up in, in case you cannot complete the climb. I would say this is pretty basic and would be fine for a beginner if they have the knowledge to set up an anchor, and safely rappel and ascend a rope. Well worth the $80 or whatever it costs. It's on my wish list.

You can lead with these devices, by building a bottom anchor, and sticking to 30m pitches. Then, for multipitch, you can come back down, retrieve your gear, ascend the rope back up to your new belay, and climb the next pitch.

You can also do "roped solo" technique without the special device, but it's not as fun. It involves tying in with figure 8 knots (on a bight) to back you up. Climbers have completed some of the longest and hardest climbs with this method.

Do yourself a favor, and get a good book or 2 on climbing. Read, read, read!

If you're a gym climber, then sorry, there is no way they'll let you use this device. Rather, just show up and start bouldering and traversing, until you find a partner. Groups with odd numbers of climbers will usually appreciate another climber because then everyone has a partner and can get more climbing in. A good way to meet new people, hopefully someon who would invite you outdoors some time to do the real thing. I would encourage any gym climbers to get some books and some help and do the real thing. Gym climbing only adresses abut 50% of the fun!

Rock Climbing?

I was thinking about putting a bouldering wall on the outside of my 3 car garage. It is pretty big and I don't want to spend all my money on the holds so I went online to find a way to make homemade ones but I'm not sure how well they work and I don't want to by the stuff if they are useless. This is the website that I found:

http://www.alpinedave.com/misc/holds/hold_making.htm

And also, is there a certain number of rocks that should be put in a given area?

Something smacks just wrong about this.

Building a rock climbing wall?

A couple of my friends and I are interested in building a rock wall of our own right outside my house. Instead of going out and buying a truckload of 2X4's and dozens of sheets of expensive plywood, however, we were hoping to build it right onto my house.
I understand that this is highly unorthodox, but financially, it just makes sense! Why go out and buy all of the materials listed above when you can save a significant amount of money by simply using what you have available?

Our plan is to go to a local sporting goods store (ie- REI) and purchase a large quantity of hand holds and bolts. Then, come home and attatch those hand holds to the outside of my house (I live in a brick house, so the holds would be bolted right onto the brick).

My question is: when I attempt to climb my newly built wall, will I compromise either the structural integrity of my home or pull out/damage any of the bricks which I climb on?

Thanks!

Navy, Semper Fi, sure, just make sure you use concrete screws and long ones at that. But, think about this. If some kids get in your yard and fall off the thing you are liable. The only way you would damage the brick is if it is old and easily cracks when you put the hand holds up. Also old houses don't have good mortar between the bricks. It gets old too. Hey man you asked.
