Why do you have to wear Bicycle shorts without underwear ?
My son wears cycle shorts butt naked but he refuses to wear underwear with them. Why ?
Cycling shorts or bibs are made to be worn without underwear. The chamois (the built in pad) is often made with anti-bacterial fabric and is designed specifically for contact with the skin. Wearing a layer between the shorts and skin will likely cause chafing, saddle sores, and all kinds of other irritation as the fabric will bunch up and get into uncomfortable areas. Both the chamois and shorts material will stretch and move with the motion of the cyclist where other materials won't.
How do you repair or sew Lycra bicycle shorts?
I have worn holes in several pairs. The holes appear in the Lycra panels where they rub the seat. Some, but not all, holes initiate at the crotch pad/Lycra seam. Have tried to repair with needle and thread, but the Lycra just unravels after a few hours riding.
Otherwise the shorts are in fine condition, so I'd hate to just trash them. In fact, the shorts are perfectly comfortable, and now, well-ventilated for rides in the hot tropics, but the exposed inner thigh skin is a bit risque.

You repair lycra shorts with your wallet. If the shorts you have fell apart, try investing in some higher quality shorts next time.
I have never worn a hole in Castelli shorts, or any Pearl Izumi Attack or Ultrasensor shorts. Stay away from the $20 house brand duds; there's a reason they only cost $20.
Is it OK for a guy to wear bicycle shorts to the gym? or is that as bad as a speedo?

I don't know what kind of exercises you're doing that would make your shorts "fly up", but if it's that much of a concern for you then you might want to consider wearing the bike shorts under your normal shorts. That way, you feel more secure and nobody feels like their eyes are being violated by being in your presence. Bike shorts on their own = Ew. What's wrong with wearing a nice pair of workout pants?? lol :)

bicycle shorts prevent butt sweat?
i bike to school alot, it's a long ride and i always get this problem of sweaty butt,it's weird though 'cause i don't get that problem when i play b-ball but only on long bike rides......anyway, i've read on some site that bicycle shorts/pants "wisk" away moisture and sweat....does that mean it absorbs and prevents the sweat from becoming visible?
I commute to work by bike and the advice I was given (and I totally live by it) is, unless the distance is quite short, do NOT bike in the clothes you want to wear all day. Buy a pair of bike shorts to ride in (the synthetic wicking fibers will move the sweat away from your body) and take them off at your destination and switch to your regular clothes. My routine
1- shower
2- ride to work
3- go to bathroom with my backpack.
4- wet down washcloth with warm water.
5- strip down
6- scrub the sweat zones starting from most clean to least clean (face/head, shoulders, armpits, crotch)
7- apply deodorant
8- put on fresh clothes
9- put bike clothes in bag
10- put washcloth in large ziplock bag
