Padded Cycling Shorts News

What brand of padded cycling shorts do you recommend?
I just took up biking. I love it except for the pain in the gluts. I'm thinking of getting padded cycling shorts, what do you think. What have you tried and what do you like? Thanks.
BTW, please let me know your experience with biking shoes as well. Thanks again.
I would check out PI (Pearl Izumi), Canari and Cannondale shorts. As far as road, PI makes an awesome entry level short, the Attack short. The chamois is almost seamless, which is awesome cause seams will rub and cause chaffing. For mountain, I find Cannondale and Fox make the best shorts for the money, they tend to have a pretty decent chamois and are very rugged/durable.
When looking at shorts, turn them inside out and check out the chamois (the pad). The placement of the padding as well as the amount of it will tell you what kind of riding the short is for, whether its more in the back for an upright rider or more in the front for a real road crouch. Also check for stiching/seams, since the more there are the more it will rub. I would stay away from gel padding, its a little more expensive and isn't worth it, in my opinion.
Right now I'm using the Novara Trionfo II road short and some cheap Cannondale mountain shorts.
Shoe wise, I would worry about getting one that fits just right. I prefer Sidis, they feel really nice on my feet, but I have friends who swear by Shimano or Cannondale shoes. Find a decent bike store and they will have plenty to size you in. Note: Almost all bike shoes are in European sizing e.x.42, 43, so if you arent sure what size you, check your running shoes, and start there.
What do you wear under padded cycling shorts?
I am having trouble working it out. Do you wear: Boxer shorts, Y-fronts, or nothing.
You wear absolutely nothing inside properly padded cycling shorts, they are designed for the purpose, anything worn inside them will cause undue sweating and soreness, it is also unhygienic and completely un-necessary.
do cycling shorts with padding really work?
I am going to get sterile unless I get something for that pressure from the seat. So do padded cycling shorts work or should I just get a softer seat?
Padded shorts help but if your butt is hurting (numb?) you need to try other saddles or try adjusting the tilt or height on your current one. Padding really isn't the issue. Finding the best saddle for your own behind is the goal. I have almost no padding on my Selle SLR but it fits me great. Price isn't what makes a good saddle. I have a couple of saddles that are more heavily padded that hurt me. If you never tried 4 to 6 other saddles you may not realize what a difference the shape makes.
If you haven't played with the tilt and height, experiment. One time I road a saddle for a month, it felt OK but I was getting a little numg after 20 or so miles. I tilted it down just a little and it made a world of difference.
What are the best ( padded ) cycling shorts?
My favorite are Pearl Izumi Microsensor bib shorts. I have a set of Assos F1-13S2s and they feel good but the PI padding is more comfortable to me.
Cycling shorts?
What are the best padded cycling shorts for the best money.
And .. what is the difference between the mens and womens shorts. They look the same to me?????
Like so many things, you generally get what you pay for. BUT, you may not need the features found in the higher tier shorts, or the basic, entry level shorts may lack the features you do need.
You can save some dollars and still get excellent performance by going with a reputable brand's 6-panel short. If you think you need the superior fit of a short with more panels, you'll pay more. Same goes for the chamois. You may find a short with a less "plush" (or thinner) but still well-constructed chamois to be more comfortable, and that may save you a few more dollars. Not all riders find a heavy chamois to be the most comfortable, especially when that extra material causes more pressure on your soft tissue areas.
See what's available in your price range and compare the features and quality of construction. You may end up purchasing several different shorts before you find one that's just right (fit and price) for you.
Women's shorts are tailored for a woman's different body (pelvic) contours. That's not to say some men might not find the fit of a woman's short more comfortable. Don't know any, but some may indeed. Women's shorts also tend to have a shorter length than men's shorts.
