How long do NHL goalies have to change their pad colours after being traded?
I know the NHL got on Chris Osgood to get pads the matched the team's colours after he was picked up by the Islanders a few years ago. I know they can be kind of different from the team, especially if the are solid black or solid white. Marc-Andre Fleury's are similar to the colours of the penguins, but a little different. If anyone could help me out on this, I'd really appreciate it.
it might take a month or 2 to get the new colors going but I don't think I've ever seen a goalie go longer than 3 with the old team's colors.
However....is there a way we can make a rule of no DAY GLO pads? cause Fleury's jsut about sends me into convulsions.
What is the difference between Nhl Center Ice and Nhl Network?
I've been doing ALOT of research on NHL center ice for Dish Network this year (07-08). And people are saying there almost close to having NHL network and there still wrapping up negotiations with the HD portion. Now NHL center ice is from indemand and NHL network is from comcast. On one site i looked at it said that Dish Network has announced that they will be using the NHL network with comcast. What is better NHLCI and indemand or NHL network and comcast?
The NHL Network is a 24 hour hockey news network. They mainly show highlights and are staffed by Gary Green and Bob Errey (among others). I'm not aware they will be showing any live games. If they are....I would like to know that too.
NHL Centre Ice only shows live games, anywhere from 1 to 14 per night (there are two Saturdays this year with 14 games), and you choose whichever game you want to watch.
How is it that the size of the NHL goalie pads increased so drastically?
They were so small back in the old days, up to the 80s even. But was there something specific that caused the pads to get bigger? And why didn't the NHL do anything to prevent it?
It was a gradual thing..............as the weight of the materials decreased, the size of the equipment just got 'bigger'.
I did this exercize a couple of years ago with a junior prospect, and we looked at the size evolution of a goalie....we chose Patrick Roy.
Looking at pictures of Roy through the ages, you don't really notice it from one year to the next. In 1984-85 he wore the heavy leather pads, in 2002-2003, he wore the lightweight spongy thingies. But it was not only the goal pads, it is the padding under thge shirt, the size of the catching glove (Mike Vernon's last glove is almost twice the size of his rookie year's glove. The blocker is slightly larger. The helmeted masks they use nowadays make the headgear look about 10-15% bigger than what they wore in 1980.
The NHL has always done things to prevent it. There has always been a 'maximum width rule for pads......but in the leather pad era....that extra 2" would have been another 8lbs. So, it wasn't until the lighter, newer materials came in the late 80s, early 90s, did goaltenders really exploit that extra 2" (and saved 15-20lbs in the process.
Then they hired Kay Whitmore to make sure that all goalies were legal.
If you put today's blocker, pads, and glove on Ken Dryden, the difference would be hardly noticeable. Add today's pants, jerseys, and upperbody equipment, and you'd be lucky to find an open spot to shoot the puck.
How does NHL Center Ice decide which feed to use for each game?
When you watch a game on NHL Center Ice, the feed is a rebroadcast of one of the team's local coverage of the game.
It varies. I've watched the same games as friends in Texas, and we've watched different feeds. It is supposed to be based on your providers relationship with other providers/broadcasters and the financial deals between them.
When did the NHL start using the salary cap?
I am doing a statistical study on how spending money improves a teams chance of winning. I was wondering what was the last season that the NHL didn't have restrictions on spending. Thank you for your help.
2003-2004 was the last season without a cap
2004-2005 NO SEASON
2005-2006 Was the first season WITH a cap ($39MM)
2006-2007 Salary Cap was $44MM
2007-2008 Salary Cap is $50.6MM

: $15.00
