How to stop with roller hockey skates?
I been playing ice hockey for 15 years, but I wanted to get a pair of roller hockey skates.
Ive had normal inline skates with the rubber stopper but, i heard that some roller hockey skates dont use them because they can effect the crossover. If this is true what type of braking system do these skates use?
Unlike CCHS_runner's assertion, the vast majority of skates are recreational/fitness and come with a heel brake.
It is very possible to do crossovers with a heel brake. I have long 5 wheel skates and have never tripped myself doing a crossover with a brake.
However, in the heat of a game with people moving near you and behind you, a heel brake can easily hit your other skate or someone elses and take you down. So you go without a "braking system".
A lot depends on what you are doing in the game and why you want to stop.
If you really just want to suddenly point in a new direction, a lunge or parallel turn is your method. This can be used to coast to a stop similar to the tight circles you see ice hockey players doing.
If you twist the rear skate so that you let it skid sideways instad of rolling and turn in tighter, you turn the lunge turn into a lunge stop.
If you are going slower and want to stop in a short distance, the little brother of the lunge stop is a spin stop.
If you have plenty of distance to slow down in or just to remove a little speed, the T stop is useful.
All of these methods remove speed by scrubbing the wheels against the ground. They will wear the wheels faster than normal skating. The faster you stop, the more wear there is.
Hockey wheels tend to have wear additives added to the urethane. They roll a bit slower but last longer because of it.
It is much easier to learn these things from watching a real person who can describe details that you can't see well. Find a hockey practice and start chatting with the players.
I have yet to see a skater who is not thrilled to be asked to teach a skill but I do know a few who cannot teach and some who understand that and pass the question to a better teacher.
Which pair of inline roller hockey skates are the most comfortable?
My son just started playing in-line roller hockey. He said his skates hurt really bad and couldnt skate anymore they were so bad. What is the most comfortable pair of of skates that I can get him? These skates are CCM brand. He ends up putting his regular street roller blades on that has all the nice cushioning in it. Why don't hockey skates have all that nice cushioning in it?
comfort depends on the shape of your foot. try a nike bauer vapor skate, they fit a little wider, like their ice hockey boots. might be better for your son.
as for the cushioning question, padding takes away from stride power. if you are pushing off, and the padding compresses, a lot of power will go into compressing the padding, instead of being transferred to the ground. may not be as comfortable, but performs way better.
How much are roller hockey skates?
I want to buy my boyfriend a decent pair of roller hockey skates for christmas, does anyone know how much money we're talking about? Or perhaps a range of the cheapest to the most expensive?
decent is a matter of opinion. i play for college and in highly competitive amateur leagues so a decent pair for me is 3-400. but if you look online you can find steals. i would never go to sports authority or dicks or anything, id go thru a hockey specialty store.
i recommend the tour code1's. i have been using these skates for 2 years now, and luckily for you they are on clearance. absolutely amazing top notch skates for only $300 that is a steal. i swear by tour, i used to use missions with the high-low chassis but mission's quality has taken a nose dive in the last few years and when you play every day you are lucky to even get a full year out of them before they break down and are too soft and fall apart

if you want to spend $200 then i would recommend the tour code red, they are only one step down from the code one.

and i personally wouldnt spend less than $100 on skates unless i had a fetish for broken ankles so these would be the lowest i go, one step below the code red's. these are probably the best bang for your buck if you arent playing absolute top level roller hockey.

you always get what you pay for, good skates aint cheap and cheap skates aint good, so you gotta think about how often you will use them and how long you want to keep them, you can prob get about 3 years out of good skates if you take care of them (ie, use your indoor skates indoors and ur old ones outdoors)
whatever you do tho, make sure you bring him to a skate shop so that you can find out what size he is for each manufacturer bc each company is different. i am a size 11 in missions and nike's, and a 9 in bauer, graf and tours. a bad fit will mean months/years of agony until you can afford new skates. the fit is much more important than the quality and i cant stress than enough.
What kind of Roller Hockey Skates SHould I buy?
Im buying new Roller Hockey Skates, my current Bauers lasted me 8 years. So you can see this is a big investment. I play in and outdoors so durablility is an issue, Id also like a high bearing rating, and comfort level. Please support your answers
Definitly the CCM Vector 2 all the people on my team have them, and they work great. They're so smooth.
Is it advisable to use roller hockey skates for cross training?
or should I buy aggressive blades instead, so I can use 'em for playing roller hockey and cross training as well. Thanks!
You can wear roller hockey skates to cross train, but I would suggest buying some extra sets of wheels to have on hand. I wear mine outside of roller hockey and have never had a problem, except for the pavement tearing up the wheels.
