How are women portrayed in Arthurian romance and The Canterbury Tales respectively?
I need to write an essay. The actual essay prompt is:
Discuss the changes (or lack thereof) in the portrayal of women in Medieval literature from Arthurian Romance through the Canterbury Tales.
I'm confused about the prompt. Was there really much change between Arthurian romance and Canterbury tales? Weren't they in the same time period? Any suggestions? Thanks!
ummm no idea im still trying to figure it out although the prompt is the same i as mine so my guess is you go to my school and your in AP english with mr young.
Chaucer read The Decameron in Italy and borrowed from it for Canterbury Tales?
Read about this in Wikipedia, but is it true? Religious malpractice is a major theme as well as focusing on the division of the three estates. Most of the tales are interlinked with similar themes running through them and some are told in retaliation for other tales in the form of an argument. The work is incomplete, as it was originally intended that each character would tell four tales, two on the way to Canterbury and two on the return journey.
Marriage is another theme?
It is true.
What would the Franklin from The Canterbury Tales be in modern day life?
For example, the squire in The Canterbury Tales is sort of a pimp, or a ladys man, so what would the Franklin be?
A land-owner - that is what the word means.
The squire is a country gentleman, the chief landed proprietor in the district. His character is another matter.
